Home grown Teddington Company Do Events Limited were extremely honoured and amazed to be chosen one ordinary Sunday in August 2015 by ex BBC Dragon Theo Paphitis as one of his 6 #SBS – ‘Small Business Sunday’ Winners.
I had tried for many weeks on a Sunday evening between 5pm and 7.30pm to catch Theo’s attention on Twitter – using 140 characters, always with the hashtag #SBS, but with no luck. Finally on Sunday 3rd August 2015 – to my disbelief Theo rewarded my tenacity and retweeted my tweet to his 450,000+ followers!
One of my more simple tweets had made it – “@TheoPaphitis We are a home grown Event & Party planning company based in #Teddington #SBS”
Theo launched his Small Business Sunday initiative in 2010 to give a boost to small businesses and entrepreneurs. Theo says he “admires people who have passion and energy and was struck by the number of business owners on Twitter who wanted to tell him about their new products and services.”
Following Theo’s #SBS retweet Do Events received a fantastic boost in Twitter followers and enquiries. The RT also allows winners access to business resources, online #SBS Family forum’s, a listing on the Small Business Sunday Website and an invitation to the #SBS Annual Event. On the 12th February 2016, I along with other lucky #SBS Winners attended the Small Business Sunday event #SBSEvent2016 at the International Conference Centre, Birmingham. The Conference is a free to attend event hosted by Theo and his own businesses Ryman’s, Red Letter Days and Robert Dyas. I along with other attendees jumped at the chance to discuss my business 1 to 1 at Meet the Experts sessions with 123.reg and ilaw.
An inspirational Question Time Panel included UKTI Business Ambassador and Co-founder of Not on the High Street – Holly Tucker MBE, Mike Pickles from The Really Useful Box Company and Theo Paphitis. SBS Winners asked the panel questions from the floor, gaining insightful business tips and guidance on how to grow their companies. One thing I took away from the day, came from Holly Tucker and her words of wisdom – There is no Silver Bullet – no one thing will catapult your business into the big time – just hard work, luck, tenacity, positivity and belief will carry you through. As Theo said – over half of all small businesses fail in their first 2 years – but the ones that succeed are the ones driven by people who believe in what they set out to achieve no matter what. Winning the #SBS Small Business Sunday Award reminded me why I had launched Do Events in 2010 and made me realise just how far Do Events had come.
The day finished with all new winners being awarded their #SBS Winners Certificates and a photo opportunity with Theo Paphitis himself! It was then time to go back home to Teddington, armed with the most fantastic goody bag and continue to work on the Company I am proud to have founded.
I met up with a number of other #SBS Winners from businesses across the country, including from Middlesex and Surrey Accounts Resource, Sassy Social Media, Ayegardening and Act One Adventures. Thank you to Theo Paphitis and his team for putting on such a fantastic day – we are all very grateful for the opportunity you have given us.
I am delighted with the things my company has achieved over the last 5 years, culminating in this fantastic recognition by Theo Paphitis. I am excited about what is yet to come as we grow. I would like to thank those who have inspired and supported me over the past few years.
Here are some images from the day and the all important #SBS Winners photo & Certificate.
